Residents crowd at hospital after quake in southern Pakistan kills 20

Crowds of victims and their relatives gathered at a local hospital in Harnai after an earthquake struck southern Pakistan on Thursday (October 7), killing at least 20 and leaving over 200 injured, according to authorities.

The earthquake with a magnitude of 5.7 struck in the early hours of Thursday while people were sleeping. Rescue workers said the dead were mostly women and children.

People were seen gathering at Civil Hospital Harnai in the dark and using flashlights. Local resident Muzaffar Khan Tareen said the seriously injured were being transferred to Quetta the provincial capital of Balochistan.

More than 100 mud houses collapsed and a large number were damaged, including government buildings. Hundreds of people were rendered homeless, Sohail Anwar, deputy commissioner in the city of Harnai, told Reuters.

The quake was relatively shallow at 20 km (12 miles) with an epicentre 102 km (62 miles) east of Quetta, said the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).
