Smoke from Alisal fire in California seen from ISS

Plumes of smoke billowing from the Alisal fire that has been raging in California were seen from the International Space Station, a video published online on Friday (October 15) showed.

The fire broke out on Monday (October 11) about 20 miles (32 km) northwest of Santa Barbara in a sparsely populated area of southern California.

It quickly spread on Tuesday (October 12) amid strong winds, shutting down a section of a major highway and commuter train lines.

Another video shared online by the International Space Station on Monday showed more clouds of smoke rising from the San Diego Bay area.

As of Saturday (October 16) morning, the fire was 50% contained, according to local U.S. forest services.

California Governor Gavin Newsom said on Wednesday (October 13) the state had secured federal funds to reimburse 75% of local and state costs related to fighting the blaze.

California is on pace to suffer more burnt acreage this year than last, the worst fire season on record when 4.2 million acres went up in flames – an area the size of Hawaii.
