‘It hurts my heart’: Concertgoers mourn at memorial after deadly stampede

HOUSTON (Reuters) – A small makeshift memorial continued to grow into the night in Houston, Texas on Saturday (November 6), a day after a stampede of fans surging toward the stage during a rap concert killed at least eight people and injured dozens more the night before.

People left simple flower bouquets and small handwritten cards at the memorial. One of the cards read “Love from NYC” and “Prayers from Louisiana”.

“Finding out there was like eight fatalities, maybe more, I couldn’t believe it because number one, I’m a huge Travis Scott fan and I can’t believe where I am enjoying my experience with him, there’s these people that didn’t make it, and it hurts my heart,” said Angel Uribe, 23, who traveled from Connecticut with his sister Geraldine to attend the festival.

Panic rippled through the crowd of largely young concertgoers who came to enjoy rap star Travis Scott’s Astroworld music festival on Friday (November 5), audience members told Reuters and other media after the stampede.

Videos posted to social media showed pandemonium as fans and staff tried to bring attention to injured concertgoers. One video showed fans attempting to make camera operators aware of the dangerous situation. Another video showed people waving toward the stage and chanting “Stop the show!”

City Police Chief Troy Finner said his department has opened a criminal investigation by homicide and narcotics detectives following unconfirmed reports that someone in the audience “was injecting other people with drugs.”

The investigation is likely to focus on security and safety protocols. Two weeks ago, another Houston concert was canceled after fans pushed into a Playboi Carti show being held within the same NRG Park complex.
