‘It’s the right thing to do’ say Australians as cricket skipper Paine steps down after texting scandal

Australians agreed that Tim Paine should step down as Australia test cricket captain on Friday (November 19) after revelations he had been investigated and cleared over sexually explicit text messages sent to a female former colleague four years ago.

“Well I think it’s the right thing to do because obviously this dates back to 2017. The man’s in a marriage with children, he’s the captain of the Australian cricket team. I mean it’s just appalling,” Sydneysider, Craig Jarman told Reuters.

The development has plunged Australia’s Ashes preparations into disarray three weeks before the first test in Brisbane starts on Dec. 8.

Breaking down in tears while reading from a statement in Hobart, Paine said he was cleared by a Cricket Australia Integrity Unit investigation but his actions did not meet the standards of an Australian cricket captain or the wider community.
