Djokovic detention a ‘political decision’, says father at Belgrade rally

The father of tennis world number one Novak Djokovic told supporters at a Belgrade Saturday (January 8) that his son’s detention was “a political decision”.

Speaking in front of the parliament building, Srdjan Djokovic said that the decision had “nothing to do with sport”.

A crowd gathered outside Serbia’s parliament in support of tennis star Djokovic, who was blocked from entering Australia on Thursday (January 6) after border guards said his visa was not valid. The sportsman had initially been granted a medical exemption from COVID-19 vaccination requirements to compete in the Australian Open.

The 34-year-old Serbian tennis champion is in a quarantine hotel in Melbourne after his lawyers secured an agreement for him to stay in the country for a court hearing on Monday (January 10).

Djokovic has consistently refused to disclose his vaccination status while publicly criticising mandatory vaccines.
